His practice focuses exclusively on issues involving occupational safety and health law.  Before launching his own OSHA Practice, Mr. Conn practiced for more than a decade alongside the former first General Counsel of the OSH Review Commission.  Mr. Conn and his OSHA Team at Conn Maciel Carey develop safety and health regulatory strategies for employers across all industries.

Prior to founding Conn Maciel Carey, Mr. Conn was Head of an OSHA practice group that was honored as the “Occupational Health & Safety Law Firm of the Year” by Corporate INTL Magazine in its 2014 Global Awards. In 2013 and 2014, he was named a “Rising Star” by Washington, DC Super Lawyers, and as a Super Lawyer every year since.  He has also been selected for inclusion in the Washington Post’s Top-Rated Lawyers list in Washington, DC.

Kara M. Maciel (Super Lawyer) is a founding partner of Conn Maciel Carey and Chair of the firm’s national Labor • Employment Practice Group. She focuses her practice on representing employers in all aspects of the employment relationship.  Ms. Maciel works to create workplace solutions for her clients across all industries. She defends employers in litigation at both the federal and state levels, including matters related to the ADA, FLSA, FMLA, Title VII, and affirmative action/OFCCP regulations. She advises clients regarding the protection of trade secrets and the misappropriation of confidential or proprietary information, both defending employers and pursuing enforcement against former employees. Ms. Maciel also provides advice and counsel to unionized and non-unionized workplaces.

Ms. Maciel received a 2014 Burton Award for Legal Writing for coauthoring the article “For Employers with High Turnover and Large Numbers of Seasonal Workers, the ACA Creates Unique Compliance Issues.” Ms. Maciel was also recommended in the Labor-Management Relations category of The Legal 500 United States (2013) and selected for inclusion in Washington, DC Super Lawyers since 2014.

Lindsay A. DiSalvo (Rising Star) is an Associate in the Washington, DC office of Conn Maciel Carey LLP. Ms. DiSalvo represents and advises employers in all aspects of the employer-employee relationship including wage and hour disputes, claims of employment discrimination, and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Ms. DiSalvo also reviews and revises employee handbooks and workplace policies and procedures, and prepares separation and settlement agreements.  Ms. DiSalvo represents employers during inspections and investigations conducted by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and state OSHA programs, and handles the full range of OSHA litigation, from citation contests to administrative hearings. Ms. DiSalvo also advises and counsels employers in responding to notices from OSHA about employee complaints of safety hazards, and helps develop and audit safety and health programs.

Nicholas W. Scala (Rising Star) is a chair of the firm’s national MSHA • Workplace Safety Practice Group.  His practice focuses on issues involving mining safety and health law.  Mr. Scala represents coal and metal/non-metal mining operators, with operations on both the surface and underground, in addition to cement manufacturers and independent contractors.  His clients’ operations extract a wide range of industrial minerals including coal, aggregates, construction sand and gravel, dimensional stone, gypsum, iron ore, limestone, and silica and frac sands.  Mr. Scala represents and advises clients in all phases of involvement with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), particularly companies challenging enforcement by the agency.  Mr. Scala also represents clients in litigation against the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as well as developing corporate safety and health policies for clients in the construction and mining industries.
